Mortal Shell II Beta: What It Was, What It Included, and Its Rewards

What the Mortal Shell II beta was

The Mortal Shell II beta (also written Mortal Shell 2 beta) was the pre-launch testing phase for the soulslike from developer Cold Symmetry, published by Playstack. It let players experience the game before its official launch and send feedback to the team. The in-game message shown when the beta opened framed it as a work in progress.

Welcome to Mortal Shell 2 beta. This is a work in progress. You can have some bugs, performance issues, unfinished content. Your feedback plays a direct role in helping us improve the experience.

Fextralife's wiki page describes the beta as "an early testing phase released on June 6, 2026, allowing players to experience and provide feedback on the game before its official launch." Steam's official page and news list the launch on June 5, 2026; the research notes attribute the difference to time zones, but both dates appear in the sources.

Phases and platforms

The beta program ran in stages: PC sign-ups opened in June 2025, the studio confirmed a PC-first plan in a February 25, 2026 update, and open betas followed on Steam and then on consoles in mid-2026.

  • June 2025 — PC beta sign-ups opened (official Steam news timeline).
  • February 25, 2026 — "Update on the Mortal Shell II PC Beta"; the studio also mentioned running closed private technical tests on PC.
  • June 5, 2026 — the open beta went live on Steam as a free entry officially typed as a demo (news post: "Now Available: The Mortal Shell II Beta").
  • July 31, 2026 — the open beta launched on PS5 and Xbox ("Mortal Shell 2's Open Beta Starts Today"), with a "Beta Available Now" trailer published on the PlayStation channel.

Early communications described the beta as PC-exclusive (Fextralife), and the February 2026 update confirmed the PC-first plan with small-scale closed technical tests. The size and schedule of those closed private tests were never made public, and the open beta later reached consoles as well.

What the beta included

The open beta offered about three hours of play, per the Steam description: "Play the opening three hours of the game in this limited Open Beta, with select progress carrying forward into the full release."

It covered the game's Prologue and extended into a sizeable area, including the Dark Morrow location, which acts as the player hub, and previewed the game's open-world exploration (Fextralife).

  • Two available Shells: Tiel and Harros.
  • The PlayStation Store description notes that Tiel, the Acolyte, is one of Mortal Shell II's eight playable Shells.
  • A work-in-progress build — the opening message warned of bugs, performance issues, and unfinished content.

These were the beta-period minimums. The final system requirements appear on the Steam page and were not captured in the research (unresolved).

Rewards

Research cross-checks (medium evidence) tie a Flayed Harbinger appearance to the beta as a reward, alongside the progress carryover. No other beta reward or its unlock conditions are documented in the collected materials.

Progress carryover

Select progress from the open beta carried forward into the full release, per the Steam and Xbox descriptions. The research adds that the carryover included the Flayed Harbinger appearance, and that skipping the prologue in the full game required having progressed past Marrow Keep (medium evidence).

The beta has ended, so these rewards and the carryover window are historical.

Current status

The Mortal Shell II beta is over. The full game released on August 20, 2026, and the research materials state that the current version of the game is the full release.

As of the research check on August 21, 2026, the free Steam entry for the Open Beta — officially typed as a demo — was still listed. The research notes flag that store entries may have been delisted or kept as historical listings after launch; that outcome was not verified.
